Experiments in mice reveal a positive effect of caffeine on the brain damage caused by Alzheimer’s disease. It is now more research on human subjects to confirm the discovery of a possible cure.
Tests on mice would believe in the existence of a potential treatment against Alzheimer disease. Scourge that affects 5% of those 65 years and 15% of those over 85 years, this disease does that treatments that delay the degeneration of brain cells but as yet no treatment to prevent it. The 19th World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics currently being held in Paris should be the state of research.
It is in this context that Professor Gary Arendash of the University of Florida announced his study and the results of his research. Experiments conducted on mice who were made to consume caffeine have shown a positive effect of caffeine on the status of rodents suffering from symptoms of the disease. This is particularly positive impact in reducing effect on the plates of protein beta-amyloid, the accumulation of this protein in the form of plates is one of the main characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease. If the caffeine side effects on the plaques of proteins is recognized on the basis of tests carried out, the researchers still argue about why this purpose. Some rely on an anti-inflammatory effect of caffeine, while for others, this compound reduces the enzymes necessary for the production of beta-amyloid protein.
This study published last Sunday on the website of the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease is already enthusiasm. However, be careful: while heartening, it has still not been confirmed in human subjects
